Arc'teryx Lakeland Revival 2017

Event Date: 01 May 2017 - 31 August 2017 Location: Lake District

Arc’teryx is proud to announce the Lakeland Revival will be taking place for the fourth year running. Set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, the revival will begin on the 29th April and run until the end of August, giving you four long summer months to get out on the crags.

The Lake District has a rich heritage, being one of the birthplaces of British rock climbing after Haskett Smith soloed Napes Needle in the late 1800s. Trad climbing is a core part of the UK climbing community and the Lakeland Revival aims to encourage and inspire climbers to explore the Lake District.

The Lakeland Revival has been growing and developing over the past three years but the aim is still simple, to revive the spirit of Lakeland climbing. This year the focus is not on cleaning dirty routes but reviving Lake District climbing as a whole – the routes, the history, the stories, the characters and the myths and legends from the Lakeland valleys. Want get involved?

This year we have the expertise of Ron Kenyon and friends from Fell & Rock Climbing Club heading up the route lists. There are a variety of themes including; Scrambles, Hidden Classics, Lakeland Gems and for those who want an extra challenge you can get stuck into the Enchainements.

Below you can find a paragraph introducing each section and you can click on the link to see the chosen routes.  There are options available for those who have never visited the area, regular Lakes goers, scramblers or those who want an extra challenge! You will still need to visit George Fisher instore to pick up a route card.

HIDDEN CLASSICS

There are many classic routes hidden around the Lake District – off the radar and away from the popular crags. What is a “classic”? Some say the obvious straight up line or a line which weaves its way up a crag – they all have “something special”. The following is a selection – there are lots more – but these should give you some great days on the crags.

The list has been broken down into three sections depending on the grade you want.

AW’ REET – Up to VS

GOOD ON YER – HVS – E2

REET ‘ARD – E3 and above

LAKELAND GEMS

For those who have never or rarely climb in the Lake District but want some classics a bit off the beaten track.

ENCHAINEMENTS

Enchainements are a great way of getting lots of climbing and visiting various crags. The basis is linking together routes “in a chain” either on the same crag or else linking crags and routes. There can be a theme to this or just a collection of routes.

Last year Ken Wilson died – he had a huge effect on the British and World climbing scene in particular with the magazine “Mountain” and the books he was involved with. A major enchainment in the Lake District is “The Classic Rock Day” linking all the routes in the Lakes in the book “Classic Rock” – which was indicated as being harder than the Bob Graham Round. Harder collections to consider are “Hard Rock” and “Extreme Rock” days.

James McHaffie however surpassed these with his “100 Extremes in Day” which he soloed in 2014 !
