Written by George Fisher

Today’s Fisher’s Favourite is Steve Birkenshaw

Steve lives in Threlkeld with his wife Emma, and their three children. Steve describes himself as a fell runner, orienteer, and at work; a hydrologist.

Steve is also the author of ‘There is No Map in Hell’.

In 2014 Steve Birkinshaw took up the challenge of bagging 214 Wainwrights in 7 days and trying to beat the record that was set than none other than local Lake District fell running legend Joss Naylor. Many believed that Joss’s record in 1986 couldn’t be beaten in what could be the ultimate Ultra Marathon. ‘There is no Map in Hell’ tells the story of Steve’s attempt at beating the record with many a tale along the way.

"I really enjoy going up Little Mell Fell with my children. It is a short, easy climb up from the road with great views of the Lake District Fells, the Eden valley and the North Pennines. The children love running back down the steep grassy descent."

We'd love to hear your stories too!
