What i have done this week

So this week has been a pretty good week with some good runs and some walking/mountaineering. Last Sunday me and a friend (Joseph Dugdale) ran up Skiddaw via ullock pike and longside edge. The conditions were great, very snowy with amazing views. The conditions were hard to run in, but made much easier with my Salomon S-lab speed shoes. The snow gave the mountain a breathbreaking appearance and the run was magical, one of the best this year.

On the Tuesday of last week, i did some hill reps up kells hill in Whitehaven with my training group. Hill reps are a very good way of training for mountain/fell running as they help your hill speed greatly. Whitehaven isn't the ideal place for a hill session, mountains are better!! But that's what we have to do in winter, as when i finish school, it's dark within an hour. On wednesday, me and my dad went up Helvellyn from greenside mines, via striding edge. It was dark so we had to use headtorches. When we got to striding edge we wore crampons and got our ice axes out for safety as the edge was in winter condition, and we then walked up striding edge to the top of Helvellyn. We descended from the top via swirral edge and then looped back round to greenside mines where the van was waiting. It was a good adventure and was especially exciting on the ascent up striding edge. The snow for most of the way up and down was deep and firm, good conditions for mountaineering.

On Thursday i went to Whitehaven track to train with my group again. The session was an easy 6x400m just to loosen off for my xc race in Liverpool on saturday. One of the races in the prestigious British cross challenge series. So on Saturday (yesterday), the race wasn't great as i didn't perform too well, but I have only just moved into the age category and i am hoping to improve on this performance throughout the season. I will also be looking to do better next year as I know what to expect.

Today, me, my dad and again my friend Joseph were hoping to do some ice climbing and mountaineering in some of the gullies around Great End. However, the gullies were pretty stripped out due to a few warmish days. So instead, we walked up great end, then me and joseph ditched our bags with my dad, changed into running gear which we had carried up and then ran up Scafell Pike. We stopped at the top for some photos and then ran back down to my dad. We then got our bags back on and headed back down. It turned out to still be a great day.

So overall, the week has been fairly good with some good runs and treks into the mountains and also some training sessions and a race. I can't wait to see what else will happen this winter!!
