Tourism Thats Green At Heart | George Fisher

The Lake District is an iconic place, loved worldwide – which is why around 16.5 million visitors come here every year to immerse themselves in the landscape.  But whilst the mountains always look impressive, visitors are often unaware that the precious habitats and species that live here are fragile. They’re being threatened by a combination of plant and animal diseases, changes in the climate and in some places the direct impact of millions of footsteps on the fells.

So how can we collectively ensure that visitors, tourism business and nature all continue to thrive in this special place? Nurture Lakeland is a local charity which works with businesses in the area to raise funds for a host of conservation projects throughout the Lake District and Cumbria. George Fisher is one such business, showing it cares for the future of the natural environment by helping us to raise funds for Fix the Fells.

Fix the Fells is a very long term project to restore and maintain hundreds of kilometres of paths in the Lake District uplands. Not only does path repair prevent large and unsightly erosion scars from blighting the landscape, but it also prevents fragile soil being damaged and washed away into watercourses. It costs around £100 to repair just one metre of footpath and involves a huge volunteer effort. Last year Fix the Fells volunteers collectively put a staggering 1,497 days of their time into the physically tough work.

You too can help to look after the fells at the same time as you look after your outdoor gear when you shop at George Fisher. Until the end of October, Granger’s and George Fisher will donate 50p to Fix the Fells for every Granger’s cleaning and waterproofing product sold.

What else can you do to help us ensure the Lake District stays special? Go to nuturelakeland.org to find out more about what we do and to donate. Check out our Green Business Directory to find which local businesses, such as George Fisher, are supporting conservation projects. If you come here by car, think about leaving it behind for the day and travelling around by bike/boat/bus or on foot.  You can make a difference.
