Photography day with Melvin Nicholson

Earlier in the year we ran a competition supported by Haglofs, for three lucky people to attend a one-day Melvin Nicholson Photography course in Keswick.

Melvin is a full time professional landscape photographer based in Preston, running workshops in various parts of the UK, with regular visits to the Lake District.

Victoria joined them and here's how the day went.

After meeting in Abraham's Cafe for a cuppa, we chatted about our photography experience to date, what model of camera we all had and discussed what we wanted to get out of the day ahead, we walked down to the Keswick launch on Derwentwater.  Melvin then talked us through setting up and shooting in the current conditions.  The weather was being kind to us with some photogenic clouds and sunshine!

We spent the morning at the launch taking photos of the boats and Melvin explained about getting down to your subject and not always shooting from your eye level, he also shared with us his inside tip, take a towel with you, put it over your head and camera to get a good look at your screen without the glare of the sunshine.  Handy tip!

After lunch we headed round to Isthmus Bay, where there is an old broken concrete jetty, not the best thing to take a picture of you may think, but with a few tweaks to the camera settings, it can make for a great photo!

After a day of learning, Melvin set up camera for a group shot, a great day had by all!  Keep an eye out for our next Melvin Nicholson Photography Day Competition.  You can find out more about Melvin and the workshops he runs around the UK at www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk.
