Arc’teryx Lakeland Revival 2016

At George Fisher we are immensely privileged to be surrounded by mountaineering history. The building itself housed the photographic studio and shop of the Abraham Brothers. George and Ashley were some of the first people to take plate cameras in to the mountains in the late 19th Century. They brought back images of Napes Needle, Pillar Rock, the Matterhorn and the Eiger to a public that had never laid eyes upon terrain so steep, high and intimidating.

These photos were not just landscapes, but also captured the pioneering rock climbers of the day like Siegfried Herford and Owen Glynne Jones. Of course the Abrahams had to be pretty accomplished climbers to get their cameras in to position to take these shots. So as you are tackling one of their First Ascents, think about climbing whilst carrying a bulky camera, tripod, and wearing nailed boots!

Our other obvious connection is our namesake and founder George Fisher. George was climbing in the early fifties, and was frustrated by the lack of mountaineering equipment available in the UK. From this opportunity he created the shop, which was soon relocated in to the old Abraham Brother’s building. As well as his day job, George was a founder member of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, and so provided both equipment and his local knowledge to rescues in the fells. George also has a number of First Ascent’s to his name. Many at the popular Shepherd’s Crag, but also on other crags in Borrowdale.

This year we are celebrating the extensive mountaineering history of the Lake District and our part in it, through the Arc’teryx Lakeland Revival.

Collect route cards from our Climbing Department in the George Fisher basement, or they can be viewed below. There are a number of cards to choose from, including one of First Ascents from both George and the Abraham Brothers. Once you’ve ticked the routes, return the card to us and you will be entered in to a draw to win Arc’teryx kit.
