Fisher's Favourites - Chris Bonnington

Written by George Fisher

This month's second Fisher's Favourite is Chris Bonington.

Chris will need little introduction to most, as his extensive and prolific career has made him a household name.

The photo shows his home of Caldbeck village nestling beneath High Pike and Carrock Fell.
Chris, the mountaineer, writer, photographer and lecturer, started climbing at the age of 16 in 1951. His climbing career has included nineteen expeditions to the Himalayas, including four to Mount Everest and the first ascent of the south face of Annapurna.
In addition he has written 17 books, fronted numerous television programmes and has lectured to the public and corporate audiences all over the world.
He received a knighthood in 1996 for services to mountaineering, and was president of the Council for National Parks for 8 years.
He is still active in the mountains, climbing with the same enthusiasm as he had at the beginning of his climbing career.

"I can remember George from my early days in Keswick in the sixties when he had the shop in Station Street and the only specialist climbing shop in Keswick. I always enjoyed a chat, am sure I bought the odd bit of gear from him but haven’t got any of it stored away.
I’ve so many rich memories of climbs and walks around Borrowdale, which incidentally I think is the best of all the Lakeland valleys."

We'd love to hear your stories too!
