Hannah has shared with us a small insight into balance and exercise to help you post injury.

Re-establishing balance post injury

• Any damage to a muscle/ligament/tendon/joint can not only lead to weakness at a joint but also proprioceptive (balance) deficits. This aspect of the rehab process can often be left out of a rehab routine post injury, but is extremely important when it comes to prevention of re-injury

• The objective of proprioceptive activities is to refocus someone’s awareness of peripheral sensations which in turn will lead to an increase in coordination

• So, for example, if you have sprained your ankle on multiple occasions, whether through sport or daily activities, the ability of the ligaments in your ankle to coordinate your balance and react to certain situations (such as uneven ground on a fell path) will be affected

• Exercises should have an element of balance and agility and be closed chain to increase stability at the joint. Examples are shown in the pictures. Tape should be used throughout this period to help improve the rehab process

Along with balance work the usual aspects of treating an injury should be sought, including reducing pain and inflammation, restoring full range of movement and improving strength
