It’s hard not to be aware of the growing outcry about single-use plastic. Taking action, a new campaign is gathering momentum to provide free drinking water, wherever you are, whenever you want it.

The campaign, spearheaded by Refill UK, allows people to fill re-useable water bottles with tap water for free at thousands of locations across the country. It’s in response to the movement against single-use plastic that sees tens of millions of plastic bottles used every day in the UK, with only half making it to recycling. The project started in Bristol back in September 2015 when Natalie Fee, founder of the marine charity City to Sea, witnessed an increasing volume of plastic bottles washing up along the River Avon. She was inspired to introduce a number of water fountains across the city. But these are expensive to provide and upkeep. Now businesses including cafes, pubs and restaurants are joining in by placing a sticker in their window saying they’re happy to refill water bottles for free, without the pressure to buy anything else.

George Fisher, Costa Coffee, Leon restaurants and the National Theatre and Tate Modern have already signed up to the initiative.

To help you find them, Refill UK has designed an app with a map showing water station locations near you. There are now around 1,600 points across the UK, and the app allows you to add your own Refill station.
