Photo walk with Carmen Norman

‘Will you be able to make it tomorrow with the snow?’ Was the text I received from Carmen.

Snow!? I poked my head through the curtains, the garden was a carpet of white. Wow, a photography walk with Carmen Norman, one of the George Fisher ambassadors and we had the treat of snowcapped fells to capture also. I quickly sent a reply, ‘oh yes, I’ll be there. See you tomorrow’.

I have always wanted to take part in a photography course as my father had a great love of photography himself. Here was my opportunity and it would start from the door of my place of work, George Fisher.

I took my husband’s DSLR camera and joined the group making it very clear my knowledge went as far as switching the camera on and taking the lens cap off, as long as it was in automatic mode it would be ok. However this was the day I was to switch to manual and learn about apertures and shutter speeds along with depth of field as we walked from famous view point Friars Crag to Ashness Bridge, then to the Lodore falls and back along the lake shore. I realized there was a lot more to learn and the day, as well as being a wonderful walk with some great people, kindled a growing interest to learn more about photography.

It turns out my husband’s camera was on its last legs and Carmen suggested a new camera would be a good idea! She kindly helped with suggestions with what to buy and I wait in anticipation for my birthday present in a few days (its ok, I know he’s bought it).
So the next step is to book a place together on one of Carmen’s camera workshops – ‘Get to know your DSLR’. This would be the beginning of our new hobby together and a chance to see if I have my father’s photographic eye.
