Hanwag - Outdoor Footwear Since 1921

We take our boot fitting service very seriously here at George Fisher and have been fitting generations of customers over the last 60 years. With this in mind, we think very carefully about the brands we want to offer our customers and were very excited to introduce Hanwag to our range of walking boots. The reason for us to welcome Hanwag (aside from being a quality family brand) was their bunion fit boot. The bunion fit offers extra room around the big toe joint. Ideal for those of us who appreciate a bit more volume there to help cope with bunions. We caught up with Christian Wittig, the marketing director behind Hanwag boots to find out more about the brand.

For those out there who don’t know Hanwag, can you tell us a little bit about the brand and your values at Hanwag?

Hanwag is a traditional Bavarian mountain and trekking boot maker located in the north of Munich. Our founder, Hans Wagner, started to produce handmade double-stitched mountain boots on demand in 1921 and since then it has been our mission to provide the best possible footwear for people who want to explore nature in the most difficult and technical terrain. We have four clearly defined brand values which are our guideline for everything we do. Quality – we do not make any compromises here, only the best materials and the most durable construction techniques are good enough for our products, Fit – we have nearly 100 years of experience in developing last systems for all kind of feet, Function – it has always been our intention to improve our boots year by year by introducing new technologies to the market and Craftsmanship – if you visit our production, you will see that basically all productions steps are executed by the skilled hands of experienced colleagues.

At George Fisher we pride ourselves on our boot fitting service, what do you think Hanwag boots will add to our range?

First of all, we are very grateful to have the opportunity to work together with partners which pay a lot of attention to provide people with boots that fit perfectly. From the very beginning, Hanwag has put a huge focus on our last systems. Today, we have not less than 17 different lasts in our portfolio, because we really try to offer boots for all kind of feet. This includes not only the classic wide or narrow last systems, but also lasts for technical mountaineering or people who suffer from bunions. Boots like our Tatra Trekking Family or our new Banks range offer a huge variety of lasts within one model. We really hope that our assortment can contribute to your boot fitting service.

At George Fisher, you can get the Men's Tatra II bunion GTX, women’s Alta Bunion GTX, men’s and women’s Belorado II low bunion GTX. Can you tell us a little bit about these boots?

These boots come from three different Hanwag categories. The Tatra II Bunion GTX is a sturdy, durable but very comfortable trekking boot built in a one-piece-construction and a minimum of seams. If you are trekking with heavy load for many days in rough terrain, this is your boot. The Alta Bunion is a boot which is constructed for day tours, rough hikes with daypacks or just to take the dog for a walk on a rainy day. The Alta is very comfortable, soft and will give you a great feeling. Last but not least, the Belorado Low is classical hiking low-cut. A multifunctional everyday shoe which is built for easy hikes and trails. Just to bring it up: All three boots a manufactured in a cemented construction which means they can be fully resoled!

'Will's World' review on the Tatra II

One of our staff members and a lucky competition winner are heading out to take part in the alpine experience. What sort of adventure will they have?

The Hanwag Alpine Experience was created for one reason: We want to bring to people into the mountains. During Hanwag Alpine Experience, which is a three-day event, we will climb Germany’s highest summit via four very different routes, for example, the technical and highly exposed Jubilee Ridge or the long, but super beautiful trek through the Reintal valley. The winners will be picked up at Munich Airport and from this moment on, they can just enjoy the climb guided by state-certified mountain guides, full accommodation and a night in one of the romantic mountain lodges around Zugspitze. We are very much looking forward to welcoming your guests and can’t wait to show them our home mountains.
