I bought a pair of these boots 8 years ago in store and I love them so much that I’m buying another identical pair. I’m in my sixties and have hiked all my life so have gone through a few pairs in that time! There is such a lot of care and thought that goes into shaping and making them as you can see on the Alt-Berg website, with different width fittings and even differences between the models according to foot shape. They even have detailed instructions on lacing and boot care. They also do bespoke boots if you need them. The Malham is a lightweight leather boot which has a wonderful rubber protective strip which keeps you out of the mud and water. I have found the waterproofing exceptionally long lasting compared with other boots and it would be even better with gaiters, which they recommend. It’s probably partly due to the stiffness of the sole, which minimises creases in the leather where your foot bends. Don’t be put off by the stiff sole….it rocks as you walk, propelling you forward and is great for walking, much less stress on the foot. The arch support and footbed are good too. If your feet normally get hot you would definitely need lighter socks in these, so maybe a smaller size. Take a good look at the Alt-Berg website and try visiting a stockist, (George Fisher are excellent!) or the factory in Richmond for a proper fitting.
